Questions, answered

Everything people ask before they run their first comparison. Still stuck? Email us — a real person replies.

Do you take commissions from energy retailers?

No. Unlike most comparison sites, we take zero commission from retailers. You pay us directly, so our only job is finding you the cheapest plan — even if that's staying where you are or negotiating a better rate.

How does "beat your plan or pay half" actually work?

Simple — you only pay full price in a year we actually save you money:

• Your first comparison is free. If it can't beat your current plan, you pay nothing.
• Once you subscribe, we re-check every season — and any comparison you run here while signed in counts too. If, across your paid year, we find a plan cheaper than the one you're on by more than your subscription fee, your subscription renews as normal.
• If a whole year passes and we never beat your plan, your next year is half price — applied automatically, no claim needed. You've still had four seasonal checks and a watch on your plan for price rises, and you go back to full price only once we've beaten your plan again.

We always email you which one it is — no refund forms, no phone calls. "Cheaper" means a lower estimated annual cost based on the usage details you give us; full detail is in our Terms.

What data do you actually need?

Just your email and your usage & rates — entered once a year, or whenever you change plans. You can drag & drop a bill (our AI reads the numbers for you) or type them in. We don't need your address or your meter number (NMI).

How is this different from Energy Made Easy?

The government's tool is good, it's free, and if you only ever want a single check — genuinely, use it. Three things are different here. We keep checking: EME shows you today's plans and never looks again; we re-run your numbers every season and email you the verdict. We price the ongoing year: EME's default estimate folds in one-off sign-up credits, which is accurate only for your first year — we show those credits but never let them sway the ranking. We follow through: after you switch, we check your first new bill against the rates you were promised. Our value isn't the check — it's everything that happens after it.

How do you compare to other paid monitoring services?

Mostly on price and on how the promise works. Ours is $30 a year for electricity, $40 with gas — about $7 a season. Savings guarantees elsewhere typically require you to claim a refund; our "beat your plan or pay half" discount applies itself at renewal, with nothing to claim. And we cover households and small businesses at the same flat price — small sites are usually ignored by brokers or charged business rates.

Isn't a higher solar feed-in tariff always better?

Not usually. High feed-in tariffs are typically paired with higher usage rates. We model your actual import vs export so the ranking reflects your net position, not a headline number.

What about the new "3 free hours" Solar Sharer plans?

From July 2026, retailers in NSW, SA and south-east Queensland must offer an opt-in plan with a free electricity window in the middle of the day (typically 11am–2pm; midday–3pm in SA) for homes with a smart meter. We compare these like any other plan — and if you tell us roughly how much power you use in that window (an optional field in the tool), we price the free hours properly. One honest warning: free windows are usually paired with higher rates at other times, so they only win if you genuinely shift usage into the middle of the day — dishwasher, pool pump, EV charging. Our ranking shows when that trade-off works for you and when it doesn't.

How often will you email me?

Four times a year for electricity + gas (if both are chosen). Recommendations and savings figures only — no marketing. Everything comes from reports@ozcurrent.com — worth adding to your contacts, because first emails from any new sender often land in spam or Promotions, and the reports are what you're paying for. Gmail users can go one step further: Settings → "Filters and blocked addresses" → create a filter for reports@ozcurrent.com and tick "Never send it to Spam". See our Privacy Statement.

Is switching free?

Switching is generally free, and most Australian energy plans no longer charge exit fees. We show any sign-up or exit fees on the plans we recommend, and we'll remind you to check your current plan's terms before you switch.

Do you cover small businesses?

Yes — choose "small business" on the comparison tool and we compare you against business energy plans across the same 35+ retailers, with the same seasonal monitoring and the same pricing as households. (We can't help large-market sites on individually negotiated contracts, where tariffs work differently.)

Which states do you cover?

We compare competitive market offers across the National Energy Market: NSW, ACT, VIC, South-East QLD and SA, plus limited offers in Tasmania. We don't yet cover WA or the NT (regulated monopolies with no competing offers) or regional QLD on the Ergon network. Enter your postcode and if we can't help yet, you can leave your email and we'll tell you the moment we reach you.
